CLEARWATER – The 12th Annual Humane Society of Pinellas Charity Tennis Tournament is Wednesday, Sept. 28, through Sunday, Oct. 2, at Royal Racquet Club. It is presented by Knology and in memory of Shannon Morton, a longtime Humane Society volunteer who passed away at the age of 19 in 1996.
All proceeds from the tournament directly benefit the animals at the shelter. The Humane Society of Pinellas has been involved in the efforts to rescue as many animals as possible in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The extra care required for the rescued animals has put a strain on the shelter finances.
Tournament divisions include women’s, men’s and mixed doubles in 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5 and open levels. Awards will be given to the champions, finalists and consolation winners. Entry fees are $40 for one event and $65 for two events.
New this year is the Bobby Curtis Tennis on the Move Carnival presented by the Andy Roddick Foundation, Friday, Sept. 30, 6 to 8:30 p.m. No tennis experience is needed and players from ages 4 through 18 can attend at no charge. The event includes tennis racquet and skill games and activities with lots of prizes, followed by a pizza party. To register, call 639-0226.
Players may register until Sunday, Sept. 25, at 2 p.m. Call Royal Racquet Club at 791-8415 or 799-3200.
