Re: Editorial cartoon, Jan. 23. Editor: The Star of David prominently placed in the heavens with a dedication to “Ariel Sharon 1928-2014” was meant by the cartoonist to celebrate the life of General and Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
There are a number of Jewish academicians who agree that Sharon is the man responsible for destroying any hope of a viable Palestinian state with the destruction of hundreds of Palestinian towns and villages and with the introduction of Israeli settlements on Palestinian lands, ergo, sabotaging any peace treaty between representatives of all Palestinians and of all Israelis. Sharon’s military incursion into Beirut allowed the massacre by Lebanese Christians of over one thousand Palestinians in the Sabra and Shatila camps of southern Beirut in September of 1982. He was found “indirectly guilty” by an Israeli Commission.
These famous academicians are: Prof. Ilan Pappe and Prof. Avi Shlaim (two Israeli historians), Prof. Noam Choamsky, Prof. Norman Finkelstein, and Prof. John J. Mearsheimer, educators and authors all.
To praise Sharon as a shining star is an aberration of historical facts which the cartoonist should have known.
