Re: “That Time of Year” Editor: Dear Mr. Germond: According to your article in the February 10-16, 2005 column on some Florida community political “sillies” – your inclusion of Belleair is unwarranted.
The session you referenced was not a political forum. It was one of two rallies being held to introduce the three opposing candidates to the residents of Belleair. The next is to be held Monday, February 21, at 7 p.m. in the Belleview Biltmore Resorts Tiffany Room.
You are invited to attend and to see first hand that “opponent bashing” is not what we are about. We are confident that anyone who attended the first session will attest to this as well.
The mayor and commissioners were not invited to speak because it would not have been appropriate. It would have been like President George W. Bush inviting his opponent Senator John Kerry to his rallies or vice-versa.
What might be considered silly was being denied use of the town hall for these sessions. The Belleview Biltmore, as a community service, offered us use of a conference room. Due to last minute planning, some people did not receive notice in time to attend. We sincerely regret this.
The type of question and answer forum you appear to be referring to will be hosted by the Belleair Civic Association on March 2 at 7 p.m. at Town Hall. We trust future columns will contain firsthand reporting, not secondhand hearsay and “Just the Facts.” Thank you.
