Editor: An issue in the present Largo City Commission election is the failure of the present commission and city administration to comply with city charter provisions. Section 9.02(4) of the Largo City Charter provides:
“No person who holds any compensated city position or office shall make, solicit or receive any contribution to the political campaigns, parties or candidates pertaining to the city elections or take part in the management, affairs or political campaigns of said elections unless such activities are for said person’s own campaigns, but he or she may exercise his or her rights as a citizen to express his or her opinions and to cast his or her vote.”
A review of the candidates’ financial reports indicates several candidates have received contributions from sitting commissioners and possibly other city employees. It will be interesting to see what action will be taken by the election official to ensure compliance with “the law” as stated in the charter and avoid these embarrassing and unlawful activities.
