Editor: I want to thank your reporter Kathy Ferguson for her coverage of my attempt to have the City of Seminole approve the additional homestead exemption for low-income seniors.
I tried to work quietly behind the scenes the last two years to accomplish this for them. I wanted to deliver it anonymously, but in order to be successful the “troops (seniors) had to be called in.” Last evening, after attending the special workshop that the city had called, I left with a “favorable straw vote” and now look forward to a city ordinance to be voted on over the next two council meetings.
In situations like this, it’s hard not to deny the “power of the press” and for that I’m grateful in your keeping it in the forefront and so much so in fact, that it was even mentioned by three of the four candidates running for office as one of the “issues.”
Now that the seniors can look forward to this in the upcoming season, I hope that you will be able to expand your news article regarding homestead exemption to include this “new feature” that will become available to them and reminding them that it’s not automatic and that they must apply.
I talked to the county again this morning, and discovered in the past they have offered local support at places like the library. So, next season, I look forward to assisting in this endeavor to further help my neighbors. As it becomes available to me, and vice versa, I will be glad to share this vital info with you.
Thank you again for helping me to help my neighbor. And thank you for writing such a great newspaper that is so informative and helpful to the community.
