Patience is key at John’s Pass and Gulf Boulevard
Article published on Thursday, March 16, 2006 |
Re: Follow up to my letter published Jan. 26, 2006 Editor: We stayed at Beach Place from Feb. 4 to Feb. 11. I stated in my last letter we expected traffic to be hardly moving due to the John’s Pass bridge construction.
As in preconstruction time, this is true now when the bridge is raised. Walking across Gulf Boulevard was very difficult and frustrating during this recent visit because Gulf Boulevard is still a racetrack when the bridge is not raised. Since it is no longer possible to walk under the bridge you have no choice as to how you will access John’s Pass.
My wife and I stood in the rain once during this past visit waiting to cross Gulf Boulevard from the John’s Pass side for quite a while before a vehicle stopped to let us cross. We were crossing at a designated pedestrian crossing.
The lost access of walking underneath the bridges is understandable. It’s a safety matter. Because parking is so limited at John’s Pass, folks park in the city beach access parking lot next to Beach Place. We have seen this over the course of the many years we have stayed at Beach Place. I highly suggest a traffic light be placed at the north entrance into John’s Pass so pedestrians can safely cross Gulf Boulevard. What’s worse for the city of Madeira Beach, the cost of a traffic light or the loss of a human life?
