Re: “Light rail, an inexpensive way to go,” letter by Bob McEwan, April 24-25 Editor: Sorry, letter writer of last week, but this light rail is not going to take you to the Tampa airport. The light rail is only going from St. Petersburg to Clearwater. Gov. Scott announced Feb. 18, 2014, that a 15-year advancement of a I-275 toll connector into Pinellas will be built with no tax increase for citizens. This new gateway will go to the St. Petersburg airport only.
And the light rail is the expensive way to go. The sales tax increase the PSTA bus company wants us to vote for in November will raise our sales tax to 8 percent, the highest in the state of Florida.
Greenlight Pinellas (their logo) plans to take the millions this sales tax increase will generate and borrow billions in grants, bonds, and debt to build a light rail system.
PSTA and our elected officials want to spend your money to please powerful special interests. We do not need a rail. PSTA has lost our trust by the way they have been managing the bus system. They need to improve the system and do a better job of meeting the needs of the l.6 percent of residents that ride the buses.
