Re: “The Second Uprising of the Irish,” by Bob Driver, July 24 Editor: I think the article you wrote in the Tarpon Springs Beacon was very myopic in the fact that you have only read and interpreted the Catholic Irish as far as your perception will lead. To put it more curtly, your perception is shortsighted to say the least.
I am an Irish Catholic and so was my family. I have roots in Ireland. Our priests were humble and good back in Ireland. The church cared for the family and was there with food when our family was going through hard times. Have you ever heard of Catholic Relief Services? Were you aware of the fact that that is one of the only nonprofit organizations where 97 percent of the donations actually go to the needy and poor? Do you know that there are hospitals and churches that now feed and clothe the poor because the government is not helping the poor indigent.
“Catholicism is more than a handful of priests who don’t know what it means to be a priest. There are 1.2 billion Catholics in the world. Every single day the Catholic church feeds, houses and clothes more people, takes care of more sick and visits more prisoners, educates more people than any other institution on the face of the earth.” So you better get your facts straight when you bash the Catholics, sir. You are reading this from an Irish Catholic who is proud of her faith!
