Takes issue with taxes and insurance costs
Article published on Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008
Editor:
I have a few questions and comments regarding the recent article about Internet sales taxes and property taxes. I would like to know where state Rep. Janet Long shops online. I pay sales tax on everything I order and was just wondering what she was talking about. I also don’t think people go out to stores first then come home and order online to avoid taxes. I think they order online for the convenience and perhaps to save money on gas due to the outrageous prices.

Now, let’s talk about property taxes. Some people are losing their homes and are unable to buy homes due to the unbelievable property taxes we pay. Not to mention the home owners insurance. Anyone who has a job in real estate, construction, home improvement, etc. has taken an incredible hit in the pocket due to both of the above mentioned. Yet, Long believes we need more taxes?

About the property taxes that go to education – we pay property taxes and send our children to private school? So we get hit twice – once for the property taxes that go to public schools and again with the tuition we have to pay to make sure our children get the education we feel they need.

School vouchers were on the ballot awhile back and were voted in but were never initiated because a liberal judge decided it was unconstitutional. Isn’t that disenfranchising the voters who voted for them? Ms. Long stated in your article that we are now a very populated and developed state compared to 30 years ago. Doesn’t that mean more money in taxes collected? She was right about one thing: “There are many serious and complicated issues facing Florida” – it’s taxes and insurance costs.

M. Long, wake up.
