Cultural differences should be considered
Article published on Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006
Editor:
I feel that the sting that is proposed by the police departments of St. Pete and Treasure Island beaches is nothing more than an opportunity to raise funds on the backs of foreign tourists.

At this time of year, there are many Europeans visiting the area and many stay in hotels that are situated across the street from local amenities, mini golf, restaurants, etc. They do not drive to these, as it is easier to walk.

However, they are unaware of the laws of crossing the streets or jaywalking in this country. In the cities where many of them live overseas, it is common practice to do just that.

I hope that the relevant officers take this into account when they write up the tickets.
