Editor: As a resident of Treasure Island, I am blessed to enjoy the serenity of this wonderful beach community. I am just an average, hardworking single lady who lives paycheck-to-paycheck, barely able to meet all of my expenses myself, but I never lose sight of the fact that I am fortunate to come home every day to a safe, beautiful little place in paradise.
However, I know that there are people in Treasure Island who aren’t making it. They are struggling every single day, praying that they have enough to get through the month. I’m positive that there is a neighbor close to me that could use some help if I would just extend my hand.
Imagine what would happen if we all did that?
As the holidays approach, we are busy with activities and this obsessive thing we call “Christmas shopping” buying material gifts for people in our lives. So often, we feel obligated to buy presents for people that we work with or the mailman or the lawn care guys. We buy something for the hairdresser and the teacher and relative we haven’t seen in years.
Instead of buying all of these gifts, just say happy holidays to all of these people and take the money you would have cumulatively spent on these gifts and go to Publix and buy some groceries and leave them at your neighbor’s front door. Buy a money order made out to Progress Energy to help pay their electric bill or buy a gas card at the local gas station and take it to them. If you know your neighbor has pets that are the joy in their lives, go to PetSmart and buy that puppy a new bed or that kitten a scratching post. Do something that means something. Do something that makes you feel good about giving.
Open your hearts to the people who are truly going to appreciate your gift this holiday season. Give the gift that is unexpected and so much more appreciated than you will ever know. If all of us who live in this wonderful little community would do one act of kindness for another resident we could truly change the meaning of giving at Christmas. I challenge you all to take part in this act of generosity.
