CLEARWATER – The public is invited to help rid Moccasin Lake Park of air potatoes and other invasive species each Saturday, 10:30 a.m., beginning March 29.
Volunteers can drop by any Saturday to help. Staff will provide the group with an orientation. Moccasin Lake Nature Park is at 600 Fairwood Ave., and participants are asked to wear closed-toed shoes, dress for the outdoors, and bring a pair of work or gardening gloves. Supervision, tools and other supplies will be provided. All ages are welcome, and students who participate are eligible to receive school service hours.
A native to tropical Asia, the air potato was first introduced to Florida in 1905. Due to its ability to displace native species and disrupt natural processes such as fire and water flow, air potatoes have been listed as one of Florida’s most invasive species since 1993.
