ST. PETE BEACH – Democrats and Progressives are hosting an Iowa Caucus Party and Democratic Straw Poll on Thursday, Jan. 3, 8:30 to 10:30 p.m., at the Beach Theater, 315 Corey Ave.
While there is controversy over the national Democratic Party's decision to possibly penalize Florida for changing its primary date - a move passed by the Republican-dominated House in Tallahassee - local Democrats are promoting the importance of still showing up at the polls, said organizers of the Thursday event.
"Regardless of whether our delegates get seated at the national convention or not, Democrats need to go to the polls in record numbers on Jan 29," said Mike Fox, District 53 chairman for the Pinellas County Democratic Executive Committee. "In my mind the rest of the country will be watching Florida all the more because of the controversy. So if you want a particular candidate to win, you need to show support. Plus, there are vital ballot issues we all should be concerned about that will be decided on the 29th. It's not just a presidential primary."
Organizers will conduct a straw poll where - unlike at the Vinoy event when the Republican debate came to St. Petersburg - every vote will count, but "one man, one vote," Fox said in a press release.
Representatives from virtually all of the Democratic Presidential campaigns are expected to attend, along with local candidates. The event also will include a demonstration of instant runoff voting.
