SEMINOLE – State Rep. Larry Ahern, R-Seminole, has filed two bills for consideration by the Florida Legislature that would give financial relief to Florida families.
The first bill, Delinquent Real Property Taxes, lowers the interest rate on the sale of delinquent real property tax certificates from 18 to 12 percent.
“With many Florida families struggling to make ends meet, this reduction will provide some much-needed relief,” Ahern said.
Former Pinellas County Tax Collector W. Fred Petty worked with Ahern on the proposed legislation. Petty says it is now time to lower the rate.
“The current 18 percent interest rate was assessed at a time when rates on loans were substantially higher than they are right now,” Ahern said.
The second bill, Tax on Sales, Use, and other Transactions, would give Floridians some sales tax relief. The popular back-to-school sales tax holiday suspends sales tax on most clothing items, schools supplies and some computers. If passed, the bill would provide the tax relief Aug. 2-4.
