PINELLAS COUNTY - Many people are looking for ways to help as the reports of loss of life, injuries and damage continue to come in from areas hard hit by Hurricane Charley. One way to help is to give blood.
Blood is desperately needed not only to replenish critically low supplies in this county, but also to assist with disaster relief efforts in counties desperately in need of help.
Florida Blood Services (FBS) is reporting that people with all blood types are urgently needed to give blood.
In a release from FBS, Don Doddridge, CEO, said "As the storm approached the last few days, many businesses canceled their previously scheduled blood drives. This has resulted already in a loss of over 1,000 much needed blood donations."
As of Tuesday evening, the FBS Web site, www.fbsblood.org, was reporting that all blood type supplies were critically low with less than a two-day supply on hand of all blood types except AB positive, which was reported as being low with only a two to three-day supply.
Many blood drives have been scheduled in the area. For the complete schedule of blood drives scheduled throughout the county, visit www.fbsblood.org or call (800) 68-BLOOD (682-5663).
