A vote could come as early as today to rename the Bay Pines Medical Center as the C.W. Bill Young Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
U.S. Sens. Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio introduced legislation on Tuesday to honor Young, 82, who died Oct. 18 at The Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. Young died from complications related to a chronic injury.
Young's visitation is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Bill Young Armed Forces Reserve Center, 2801 Grand Ave. in Pinellas Park. A public funeral is at 1 p.m., at First Baptist Indian Rocks, 12685 Ulmerton Road, Largo. A private burial will follow.
Nelson said the bill is a companion to a House bill introduced by Rep. Jeff Miller that may be voted on as early as Wednesday.
“Floridians and our nation’s veterans have known no better public servant than Congressman Bill Young," Rubio said in a press release."It is only appropriate that this facility, which cares for so many Pinellas County veterans and their families, bears the name of Bill Young who worked for decades in Congress to see that the VA and veterans’ medical care was properly funded. Naming this important facility in Congressman Young’s memory is one small way we can pay tribute to Bill’s unparalleled record of service to our military service members and veterans.”
