Beware of loans disguised as rapid refunds

PINELLAS COUNTY - As another holiday season comes to a close our thoughts quickly turn to tax season in anticipation of income tax refunds.
Advertisements often tout rapid refunds at this time of year, but claims for a quick tax refund are actually refund anticipation loans. Filing an income tax return through these businesses will actually reduce the refund because of fees charged.
Instead, of falling for a rapid refund ad, consider getting tax preparation assistance at one of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites located throughout Pinellas County. Trained volunteers will offer assistance in filing taxes online. These volunteers are able to assist those who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax credit, as well. The EITC alone can provide up to $4,400 a year in tax refund for those who qualify.
VITA sites are sponsored by the Prosperity Campaign of Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties. Sites will open in both counties between Jan. 14 and Feb. 1, and will remain open through the April 15 tax filing deadline.
To find the VITA site, call 2-1-1.
For more information, call Pinellas County Extension at 582-2113.
