ST. PETERSBURG – Sheryl “Sherry” Brock, a math and journalism teacher at Dixie Hollins High, was named Pinellas County Schools’ 2007 Outstanding Educator during a recognition event at Tropicana Field on Feb. 13.

“I was completely surprised to win,” Brock said. “I never have considered myself to be extraordinary. I think of myself as someone who has learned how to teach from extraordinary teachers and mentors – someone who has sat on the shoulders of giants.”

The 53-year-old Dixie Hollins graduate said it’s her students who motivate her and her profession that nurtures her.

“I want each of (my students) to realize that he or she is a treasure chest of gifts and opportunities, just waiting to be revealed,” Brock said.

Sponsored by the Pinellas Education Foundation, the Outstanding Educators Recognition Program selects exemplary educators annually in five categories.

This year’s event was co-sponsored by corporations such as Aetna and Bright House Networks and featured musical performances by students and teachers.

A practicing family attorney, Brock began her career with the district in 1974 as a social studies teacher at Bauder Elementary. She moved to Dixie Hollins to teach math in 1975 and later taught math at Pinellas Vocational/Technical Institute, Lakewood High and Boca Ciega High. She returned to Dixie Hollins in 1990.

The University of South Florida and Stetson Law alumna has been a Girl Scout leader, founded the Dixie Hollins Alumni Association, and chartered Mu Alpha Theta math honor society at Lakewood and Boca Ciega high schools.

Dixie Hollins’ yearbook adviser since 2004, Brock is creating an organization called Parents of Publication Students to support students who produce the school’s newspaper and yearbook. She also does pro bono legal work for students, their families, the elderly and others in her free time.

Her advice to fellow educators and those considering entering the profession? “Focus on the whole student – not just on his math or writing ability,” she said. “You have to go that extra step to get to know them and their circumstances. I’m in their business all of the time, whether they like it or not.”

Also important, Brock said, is making every effort to involve students’ families in the education process.

As the county’s 2007 Outstanding Educator, Brock will compete for the title of Florida Teacher of the Year.

In addition to winning a three-day Bahamas cruise for two and $2,000 in getaway money from the Pinellas Education Foundation, Brock received a desktop PC from Apple Computer, a commemorative ring from Balfour and a chauffeur-driven limousine ride to school Feb. 14, courtesy of Julie’s Limousines.
