County gives green light to railroad crossing improvements
Article published on Thursday, March 1, 2007
CLEARWATER – Commuters who use Bryan Dairy and McMullen Booth roads will need a new route in the near future. Both roads are scheduled to be closed for up to three weeks in May and June for railroad crossing improvements.

The Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved on Feb. 20 expenditures of about $630,000 for construction agreements with CSX Transportation. Construction of a new full width concrete surfaced crossing should begin on McMullen Booth Road in May and on Bryan Dairy Road in June.

According to plans, improvements on Bryan Dairy Road are necessary to accommodate future widening to a six-lane divided roadway from Starkey Road to 72nd Street.

Improvements to the McMullen Booth Road railroad crossing, which officials said was in significant need of replacement, originally was scheduled for the summer of 2006; however, the project was delayed because of the construction on U.S. 19 at Drew Street, State Road 590 and Sunset Point Road.

Officials said U.S. 19 is now ready to handle the extra traffic that will come while McMullen Booth Road is closed.

Officials expect the work to take about one month per project and estimate that the roads will be closed at the railroad crossing for two to three weeks. Officials said plans included keeping complete road closures to as little time as possible.

Public notification plans are a cooperative effort between Fire and Emergency Management Services, Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, Florida Department of Transportation and Pinellas County Utilities. Officials also are working with Pinellas Park and Largo to coordinate the needs for the Bryan Dairy Road project. Safety Harbor and Clearwater are active in the planning for closure of McMullen Booth Road

Cost of the Bryan Dairy Road project is $308,022 and $321,022 for McMullen Booth Road. The projects are funded by Penny for Pinellas and Transportation Impact Fees.
