Suspect in rape case extradited from France
PINELLAS COUNTY – A man who fled to France to escape alleged rape charges has been returned to Pinellas County by U.S. Marshals.

Alan B. Curtis, 53, in 2005 is charged with sexual battery. He also violated probation from charges of one robbery and two sexual battery cases in St. Petersburg dating back to 1999.

The 2005 case allegedly occurred 10 miles off Pinellas County in the Gulf of Mexico. Deputies said the suspect allegedly raped a woman on his fishing boat. Deputies said Curtis fled to France where he was arrested. The suspect, deputies said, then jumped bail and escaped to Spain where he was again apprehended. Curtis pleaded guilty to the St. Petersburg rape and robbery case and was sentenced to a suspended 20-year prison sentence and probation.

Deputies also said Curtis fled the area in 1982 and lived out west for 11 years after stabbing to death a Largo man. Convicted of manslaughter, he received a reduced sentence due to the interventions of the victim’s family.
