GULF BEACHES – Eager volunteers armed with trash bags and rubber gloves collected debris at the Pinellas Spring Cleanup on March 18.
The Pinellas program, in conjunction with the Great American Cleanup is planned, coordinated, managed and promoted by Keep Pinellas Beautiful. Residents and vacationers participated at 25 locations in the county.
Steve and Karen Hill, annual vacationers from Muskegon, Mich., heard about the cleanup through the Indian Shores town newsletter.
“I enjoy the beach and if I can make it better, then I’d like to,” Steve Hill said.
Avid beach walker, Joann Brooks-Daly from Toronto, Canada, is bothered by all the garbage on the beach.
“When I walk the beach, I see so much garbage lying around,” she said. “I am doing this to keep the place I like to walk clean.”
The Jewell family of Indian Rocks Beach participated in the clean-up for the first time.
“We wanted to get the kids involved in the community,” Patricia Jewell said.
Walter Fitzgerald vacations on the beach for four months out of the year from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He said it only takes a little bit of time to keep the beaches beautiful.
“I enjoy helping with the cleanup and come down for an hour every time they have the beach cleanup,” Fitzgerald said. “An hour by sections, really makes the beach that much prettier.”
