LARGO – The new teen club 4-H Operation Military Kids plans its first meeting on Friday, April 4, 4:30 to 6 p.m., at 4-H Pinellas County Extension, 12520 Ulmerton Road.
Teenagers interested in community involvement may participate in the club.
This program combines the efforts of 4-H members, volunteers and staff to provide community support, awareness and educational programs to benefit the youth and families of National Guard, Reserves and Accessions. Teenagers can participate regardless of whether they are from a military family or not.
Teenagers will work with National Guard, Reserves and Accessions that will deploy within the next two years. They will participate in advisory meetings and add their ideas through brainstorming and discussions. Members will become part of the Speak Out for Military Kids that works to educate and train military and non-military citizens on deployment’s affects.
Members of 4-H OMK will participate in recreational, social and educational programs. They gain leadership, organizational, technical and research skills by taking part in the Speak Out for Military Kids program. Military children also may receive help with school issues. In the future, they will be able to attend day or weekend camps and meet other children experiencing deployment.
OMK is a national initiative designed to reach out to military youth and families before, during and after their parent’s deployment.
Teens interested in learning more should call Jennifer Smith at 582-2469, e-mail jsmith@pinellascounty.org or visit www.pinellascounty.org/4H.
