Parent letters on school assignment in the mail
Article published on Thursday, April 19, 2007
LARGO - Beginning this week, thousands of parents will receive notification of their child’s school assignment for next year.

More than 84 percent received their first- or second-choice school in the recent Choice Plan computer match that followed the attendance area application period. Adding those assigned early due to the family preference, the percentage grows to 86 percent receiving first or second choice.

Seventy-eight percent of parents received their first-choice school.

More than 18,500 notification letters are being sent to:

- parents of students who received their first-, second- or third-choice school

- parents of students who did not receive an assignment due to capacity issues

- parents of students who did not file an application by the March 24 deadline

Students who did not receive their top choice school will be placed on a waiting list. The waiting list number will be included in the school assignment letter along with information about waiting list procedures.

Parents of students staying at the same school next year or those assigned to a middle or high school through extended grandfathering will not receive a letter.

Parents of children who could not be assigned because of capacity issues still can have a say in their child’s school assignment. They are being asked to call a specific phone number at a specific time April 23-27 to talk to a district employee about the options available to them. They will have first choice of the schools in their attendance area with space available.

Parents with students entering kindergarten, grade six or grade nine who were required to submit an application but did not apply before the March 24 deadline still have an opportunity to have a say in their child’s school assignment. To have a choice of schools in their attendance area with space available, parents must call a specific phone number at the specific time April 30-May 4 as listed in their notification letter. They will be able to talk to a district employee about the choices that remain for them.

Parents of students entering a Pinellas County public school for the first time next year who have received their school assignment need to complete the registration process at the assigned school. They should bring the child’s birth certificate, proof of residency, certificate of immunization, report from a physical exam that is no more than one year old and the notification letter with the child’s school listed.

Elementary schools will have spring registration April 23-May 4. Parents of middle and high school students should call the assigned school for registration procedures.

Those without school assignments who do not take advantage of the opportunity to call during the periods noted in their notification letters will have to wait until after June 1 to contact the district call center at 727-587-2020 to get a school assignment.
