TIERRA VERDE – A 64-year-old Michigan man died at a local hospital Saturday morning after he was pulled from the waters offshore Fort De Soto Park, 3500 Pinellas Bayway S., St. Petersburg.
According to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s report, the victim, Donald Bautel, was participating in the “Escape for Fort De Soto” triathlon. Witnesses said that during the swimming portion, he appeared to be drowning. Swimmers in the area pulled him from the water, began CPR and called 911.
Deputies and emergency medical service personnel responded to the call for help about 8:16 a.m. April 19. Bautel was transported to a local hospital where he died. Deputies said the drowning appears to be accidental and may be health related.
