LARGO – The 19th Annual Pinellas County Law Enforcement Memorial Observance took place on May 10 at the Law Enforcement Memorial Park.
The Pinellas event was observed during National Law Enforcement Memorial Week. Fortunately, no new names of fallen Pinellas Officers had to be added to the memorial stone at the Pinellas County Memorial Park.
Since 1905, 20 Pinellas County law enforcement officers have been killed in the line of duty and are memorialized on the stone marker in the park. The most recent loss was in 1993, when Belleair police Officer Jeffery Tackett was shot with his own gun during a struggle with a would-be-burglar.
Pinellas representatives from all state, local and federal law enforcement agencies participated in the event. During the ceremonies law enforcement officers placed a wreath at the memorial stone. A 21-gun salute followed, along with taps and special performances by the Dunedin High School Scottish Highlanders Pipe Band.
