SPC continues to expand its four-year degree programs
Article published on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 |
PINELLAS COUNTY – The ongoing development of bachelor’s degree programs at St. Petersburg College doesn’t stop at the Pinellas County line – it extends halfway around the world.
Thanks to the visionary leadership and entrepreneurial spirit of SPC President Carl M. Kuttler Jr. and Thomas E. Furlong Jr., SPC’s senior vice president of Baccalaureate Programs and University Partnerships, international educational opportunities are being created with Estonia’s Tallinn University of Technology and with Russia’s St. Petersburg State University and its Rostov State University.
Building upon the celebration of the 100th anniversary of St. Petersburg, Fla. (which is a sister city with its Russian counterpart), Kuttler and Furlong continue to cultivate cooperative opportunities in education with the three universities. Those opportunities now include SPC bachelor’s degrees, which, with the addition of banking in September, will total 16.
In May 2005, SPC and Rostov State signed an agreement that encourages sharing in the areas of terrorism prevention and response activities. SPC is home to the National Terrorism Preparedness Institute at its Allstate Center. The two schools are working on joint development of a Foreign Language Institute that will emphasize online language instruction in English and Russian, plus creation of an international business curriculum via distance education.
Also under way is initiation of a cooperative exchange between SPC’s College of Education and its National Center for Teacher Transformation, and Rostov State’s faculty and research staff, who are researching areas of secondary/university transition in Europe. In addition, the two institutions are exploring the possibility of SPC offering its online baccalaureates in Russia. Meanwhile, Technology Management and International Business majors at SPC have an articulation agreement with the University of South Florida to move on into USF’s M.B.A. program.
