PINELLAS COUNTY – Mary Brown, Pinellas Public Library Cooperative executive director and Michele Abramo, board chairman, were among those urging Capitol Hill legislators to support libraries as part of the 30th National Library Legislative Day May 1 and 2 in Washington, D.C.
As part of the legislative delegation representing Florida, Brown and Abramo met with members of the Florida Congressional delegation to seek support for library legislation now pending in Congress.
The event is sponsored by the American Library Association, the District of Columbia Library Association and other concerned organizations to raise awareness about the importance to local communities of federal funding and programs such as the E-rate discounts on telecommunications services for libraries.
Brown said that with federal aid, the Pinellas Public Library Cooperative in Clearwater was able to provide a wide variety of library services to the residents of Pinellas County. Three of those special services are the Born to Read Family Literacy program that targets at-risk families, the Deaf Literacy Center program that provides computer and literacy class training to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and the Talking Book Library which supports library service for patrons that are blind or physically handicapped. In addition to these programs, the Florida Electronic Library is funded through these federal dollars.
