In response to citizen requests, Ken Burke, Pinellas County Clerk of the Circuit Court, has organized a Child Support Community Outreach Forum to be held on Wednesday, July 14, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. in the Jury Assembly Room of the Criminal Justice Center located at 14250 49th St. N. in Clearwater.
“Nearly every time I am out in the community doing a presentation about the Clerk’s Office I get asked many questions about Child Support case issues,” said Burke. “We open an average of 360 new Child Support cases a month and we have nearly 25,000 active cases in Pinellas County. In each of those cases there are on-going issues of modifications and other actions. Many of the people involved in these cases need information on how to take the next step but have difficulty navigating the system to get that information.”
The Clerk’s Self Help Center schedules an average of 30 attorney appointments monthly for customers needing legal consultation on Child Support cases, according to Burke.
“The steady number of people using the Self Help Center to assist them as they represent themselves in Civil Court in Child Support cases indicates the need for affordable access to information in this area,” said Burke. “This free forum will enable people to meet with attorneys who have volunteered to participate and with representatives from the Department of Revenue which enforces 78.5 percent of the Child Support payment arrangements in Pinellas County.”
Burke’s office has created an online R.S.V.P. page and is disseminating more the 5,000 brochures to let people know about the free event that will give citizens an opportunity to ask volunteer lawyers essential questions about child support cases such as, What can I do about someone not paying their child support? or if someone is not paying me child support do they still have visitation rights? and more.
