Pinellas County students scored on par with the state in FCAT reading and math scores this year.
In reading, the countys average scores for fifth- through ninth-graders all were slightly above the state average for students who scored at or above grade level (or a score of 3, 4 or 5.) Grades 4 and 10 had the same percentage of students as the state average who scored a 3 or higher.
County average science scores for fifth-graders were the same as the state average at 46 percent of students scoring a 3 or higher. Pinellas science scores for eighth- and 11th-graders were slightly lower than the state average.
We applaud the efforts of teachers for increased scores in FCAT reading, math and science, said Superintendent Julie Janssen in a press release. While we will continue to emphasize reading and writing as essential skills, math and science instruction will be a primary focus next year. Every school will receive the support of a trained math/science coach to enhance instruction.
