Pinellas County students scored on par with the state in FCAT reading and math scores this year.

In reading, the county’s average scores for fifth- through ninth-graders all were slightly above the state average for students who scored at or above grade level (or a score of 3, 4 or 5.) Grades 4 and 10 had the same percentage of students as the state average who scored a 3 or higher.

County average science scores for fifth-graders were the same as the state average at 46 percent of students scoring a 3 or higher. Pinellas science scores for eighth- and 11th-graders were slightly lower than the state average.

“We applaud the efforts of teachers for increased scores in FCAT reading, math and science,” said Superintendent Julie Janssen in a press release. “While we will continue to emphasize reading and writing as essential skills, math and science instruction will be a primary focus next year. Every school will receive the support of a trained math/science coach to enhance instruction.”

The county reading averages are as follows:

• Grade 4 – 74 percent scoring at or above grade level in reading, tying with the state level

• Grade 5 – 72 percent versus 71

• Grade 6 – 67 percent versus 66

• Grade 7 – 68 percent versus 67

• Grade 8 – 56 percent versus 54

• Grade 9 – 48 percent versus 47

• Grade 10 – 37 percent, tying with the state

The county math averages are as follows:

• Grade 4 – 75 percent scoring at or above grade level, tying with the state level

• Grade 5 – 62 percent, tying with the state

• Grade 6 – 55 percent, tying with the state

• Grade 7 – 60 percent, tying with the state

• Grade 8 – 66 percent, tying with the state

• Grade 9 – 69 percent versus 68

• Grade 10 – 66 percent versus 69

The county science averages are as follows:
