PINELLAS COUNTY – The Gulf Boulevard Construction Project is continuing on schedule, according to a June update from Pinellas County Utilities.
The many faceted three-mile project from Park Boulevard and Walsingham Road includes work on the seawall; a new roadway; improved shoulders with bike and walking paths; a 16-inch reclaimed water transmission main; reclaimed water distribution lines; potable water line upgrades; sanitary sewer upgrades and other improvements.
Construction is expected to be complete by late August 2009.
Work began on Nov. 15, 2007, south of Whitehall Avenue with improvements to the seawall. As of June 6, 46 feet of new seawall and 794 feet of replacement seawall between Indian Shores and Indian Rocks Beach had been completed on schedule.
The roadwork portion of the project was planned so it could be done in 1,000-foot segments, Paul Giuliani, the county’s project manager, said in November. He said residents should be able to get an idea of what the completed project would look like as each of segments was completed.
To date, more than 3,000 feet of roadway have been milled, according to Utilities officials. An additional 1,400 feet of the northbound lane from 193rd Street has been restored.
Officials said work on the road shoulders, including bike paths and sidewalks was beginning “to take shape” with 2,500 feet complete from 192nd Street on the west side of Gulf Boulevard.
Work also is on schedule for the reclaimed water portion of the project.
According to the press release, in Indian Shores, 5,543 feet of 16-inch reclaimed water lines have been installed with 109 service connections completed to date. More then 2,500 feet of potable water lines also have been installed.
In Indian Rocks Beach, 3,943 feet of the 8-inch sewer main have undergone repair and re-lining.
The new drainage system also is “progressing at a strong pace” and the installation of the storm drainage pipe and inlets at 193rd Street is complete, the press release said.
Construction plans for the next 60 days include more directional drilling for the reclaimed water mains along both sides of Gulf Boulevard. When the drilling is finished, a 4-inch pipe will be installed between First Street and Walsingham Road.
Utilities officials said pipe installation would be done in a way to create the least impact on property owners and allow normal flow of traffic on Gulf Boulevard as much as possible.
After the pipe is installed, reclaimed water service connections will continue along with the installation of 350 feet of new sanitary sewer pipe near Third Street. When the sewer pipe is in place, the bike lane and sidewalk construction from First Street to Walsingham Road will begin.
Although reclaimed water connections will be done as the project progresses, the service will not be available until the entire project is complete.
Pinellas County is in charge of the joint project with the Florida Department of Transportation and Indian Rocks Beach. The contractor is PBS&J Constructors Inc.
Residents with questions about the project can call the Pinellas County hotline at 464-4273 or visit www.pinellascounty.org/gulfblvd. After hours emergencies should be reported to 464-4000.
