Article published on Wednesday, July 12, 2006
ST. PETERSBURG – The Junior League of St. Petersburg will present its 10th annual Back to School Care Fair on Saturday, July 15, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Johnnie Ruth Clarke Health Center and The Boys and Girls Club of the Suncoast.

The event offers free immunizations to local at-risk children given by the Pinellas County Health Department, medical exams performed by medical personnel from Bayfront Medical Center and All Children’s Hospital and vision screenings by Lion’s Club volunteers. Dental screenings by the University of Florida College of Dentistry and the Pinellas County Dental Hygiene Association also will be available.

Other features of the event include:

• Car seat safety checks by the St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue Department.

• A Bike Rodeo/Safety Fair. Bicycles and helmets are required to participate.

• Music and dance presented by the Boys and Girls Club of the Suncoast in the city of St. Petersburg’s Showmobile.

• Snacks and beverages for sale with proceeds benefiting the Boys and Girls Club of the Suncoast.

• KidsCreate! Hands-on craft activities hosted by the Junior League of St. Petersburg.

All children must be accompanied by a legal guardian in order to participate in Back to School Care Fair activities. Adults are asked to bring children’s birth certificates and immunization records. Free parking is available.

In addition to the activities outlined above, backpacks filled with school supplies will be distributed to the first 2,200 school-aged children and more than 40 community agencies will be on hand to promote services and programs available to families. Contributions of school supplies and/or backpacks are greatly appreciated. The Junior League would like every school-aged child in attendance to receive a backpack.

Donations can be made by contacting the Junior League of St. Petersburg at 895-5018 or e-mail hq@jlstp.org.

The Back to School Care Fair is only one of the many projects of the Junior League of St. Petersburg, an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.

The fair will be at 1344 22nd St. S. Contact Elise Minkoff, president, Junior League of St. Petersburg at 895-5018.
