Parents need to act now to get a school assignment
Article published on Tuesday, July 29, 2008
PINELLAS COUNTY - Parents with a child starting school this year who does not have a school assignment need to begin the process right away. School starts Aug. 19, and sites will become increasingly busy as opening day nears.

School bus transportation postcards are being mailed Aug. 1 to more than 64,000 eligible students with bus stop location, pickup and return times, and safety information. Students who live more than two miles from the assigned school are eligible to ride a bus. Those who do not receive a postcard by Aug. 7 should contact the assigned school or go to www.pcsb.org, click on “parents,” then “transportation” to find the nearest existing temporary bus stop.

If the postcard has an incorrect address or the child has moved, parents should contact the assigned school.

To get a school assignment, parents need to visit any public middle or high school (call first to check the hours of operation) or one of the following sites that will be open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. week days with additional personnel (parents who already have a ParentCONNECTxp password do not need to visit a school):

- Student Assignment, Administration Building, 301 Fourth St. SW, Largo, 727-588-6210.

- Clearwater High, 540 S Hercules Ave., 727-298-1620.

- Gibbs High, 850 34th St. S, St. Petersburg, 727-893-5452.

The next step is to access the Student Reservation System on a computer at the high school or on their home computer. By going to www.pcsb.org, the parent will be able to click on the Student Reservation System link to go through the process of reserving a seat at a school.

The final step for parents, which cannot be taken at the elementary school level until Aug. 11, is to visit the assigned school before the reservation expiration date (Aug. 21) with the required documents – birth certificate or other proof of identity/age, proof of residency, child’s Social Security number (optional), child’s most recent report card (for students entering grades one to 12), Florida certificate of immunization and physical exam report. (Go to www.pcsb.org, click on “parents,” then “new student registration” for a full description of required documents.) Middle and high school personnel who handle this information are available in the schools now.

For more information, call the student assignment office, 727-588-6210, or the district call center, 727-587-2020.
