Campus opens new residence hall
Article published on Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006
ST. PETERSBURG - Students will begin moving into the first residence hall at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg Wednesday, Aug. 23.

The hall can accommodate up to 354 students. Monthly rates for a full academic year range from $374 to $571, through a scholarship program.

Each apartment has a full kitchen, including refrigerator, range, microwave, and garbage disposal. Each floor has its own laundry room and study lounge with wireless access, school officials said.

The campus estimates the economic impact on the new residence hall, located at 500 Second St. S., on the downtown St. Petersburg area at $2 million annually.

A dedication ceremony for the new residence hall is slated for 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 22. At the same time a new parking garage at the corner of Fifth Avenue South and Third Street South also opens and will have 1,100 spaces.

The cost to the campus for both the residence hall and the new parking garage is $33 million.

College officials expect the campus will attract many local students.

According to school officials, one of the first students ready to move in is a marketing major from Safety Harbor. The student is on campus six days a week and didn’t want to commute.

Enrollment at the campus is about 4,700 students.
