A Treasure Island man died at 6 a.m. Sept. 12 at Kindred Hospital in St. Petersburg from injuries he received while in the back of a van transporting him to the Pinellas County Jail.
Thomas Morrow, 60, was taken into protective custody by the Treasure Island Police Department July 6 under the Marchman Act, aka the Florida Substance Abuse Impairment Act, which allows people to get help for family members who do not seek substance abuse services voluntarily.
Leonard Lanni, 37, also had been taken into custody that same night on disorderly conduct charges. According to investigators with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, at about 10:55 p.m., Morrow and Lanni were being transported to the Pinellas County Jail when Lanni battered Morrow.
Morrow was transported to Bayfront Medical Center by ground for treatment of life-threatening injuries. He was later transferred to Kindred Hospital where he died. The Medical Examiner’s Office has taken custody of Morrow’s body and an autopsy will be conducted.
Lanni is being held in the Pinellas County Jail on charges of attempted second-degree murder. The State Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case and Lanni could face a murder charge.
The criminal investigation continues as well as the Sheriff’s Office review of the incident.
