ST. PETERSBURG – A birthday celebration turned tragic Sunday morning when a 2-year-old boy riding a scooter in a patio area near a fire pit at the KOA Campgrounds lost his balance and fell into a pit of heated coals.
Pinellas County Sheriff’s detectives with the Crimes against Children Unit are investigating the incident that happened about 10:30 a.m. Sept. 15 at the campground located at 5400 95th St. in St Petersburg.
According to detectives, the family was staying at the campground celebrating Johnathan Moore’s second birthday.
Detectives said the boy’s mother, Tracey Fincher, 32, of St. Petersburg and other family members pulled the him out of the pit. The family called 911 and administered aid until first responders arrived on scene. The child was transported by air to Tampa General Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Detectives said the child was in stable condition in the intensive care-unit of the hospital. He sustained first and second degree burns to his back, left arm and left leg.
Detectives said the incident appears to be accidental in nature. The investigation continues.
