Rep. Young honored Stowers in Congress on Sept. 7 for his dedication to Pinellas County's environmental stewardship.

Commissioners and administration officials had Young's comments framed as a memento of the statement, which has become part of the Congressional Record.

County Administrator Stephen Spratt congratulated Stowers and commented with a smile, "It's not too often that one of our county employees is recognized on the floor of Congress. ... But, one of our employees... who has dedicated his life to Pinellas County, was recently recognized by Congressman Bill Young for his stewardship and advocacy for environmental preservation in Pinellas County."

Commission Chairman John Morroni said to Stowers, "You have put your heart and soul into the preservation of park lands and greenways for our residents and all the visitors who come to Pinellas County to enjoy."

He thanked Stowers for his commitment to preserving the environment and praised his leading role in projects such as Brooker Creek Preserve and Fort DeSoto Park.

In his statement to Congress, Young said, "Jake Stowers... has poured his life and soul for more than 30 years into giving our urban community an abundance of green spaces and outdoor recreational opportunities."

In commenting about Stowers' planned retirement next year, Young said, "Mr. Speaker, Jake Stowers is a case study of what love and passion for your job will yield, in this case for the greater good of an entire community. ... The legacy of his lifelong work will live on for generations of future Pinellas County residents and visitors."
