PINELLAS COUNTY Keep Pinellas Beautiful is looking for volunteers to participate in the annual Coastal Cleanup on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 27 locations throughout the county.
A day at the beach can make a world of difference,” according to organizers. Removing litter makes for a clean community and cleaner communities tend to attract more businesses and more tourists.”
More than 70 percent of urban litter is washed onto beaches, shorelines, bayous and waterways due to the summer rains. Not only is the litter unsightly, it causes a variety of problems, including death and injury of wildlife.
As the litter is removed, fewer turtles die from ingesting plastics, fewer birds become entangled in fishing line and smaller marine life will not be depleted because they consume Styrofoam particles and cigarette butts,” said Bill Sanders, executive director of Keep Pinellas Beautiful, in a press release.
Thousands of volunteers have participated in past coastal cleanups, removing tons of debris and litter, and help is needed again this year to keep the countys beaches beautiful.
Volunteers do not have to register; however, groups of 10 or more planning to go to one location should call 533-0402 so organizers can plan and make sure enough supplies are on hand. Volunteers should wear closed-toe shoes, hats and bring plenty of sunscreen. Water, supplies and tools will be provided.
