School bus drivers awarded
Article published on Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007
PINELLAS COUNTY - Annie D. Hobson has been working behind the wheel of a Pinellas County Schools’ bus for 32 years. In that time, she has not had a single accident or citation – not in a school bus or private vehicle.

Her route this year covers Lakewood High, Clearwater Intermediate and Frontier Elementary. She is among 17 drivers with perfect records for 10 years or more who will be honored during National School Bus Safety Week, Oct. 22-26.

Milton Fleming’s perfect driving record was 34 years when he retired in June. Margie J. Moan, who also retired in June, had a 27-year perfect record. They will be among the 17 school bus drivers recognized for their driving excellence during the Oct. 16 Pinellas County School Board meeting.

Also being recognized are Cheryl B. Perry and Deborah B. Smith, a pair of safe-driving sisters who have been steering school buses along the right path for 24 and 22 years, respectively. Perry drives for Pinellas Park High and Paul B. Stephens School, and Smith drives for APPS North (teen parenting school) and Paul B. Stephens. They certainly are a good example for a third sister, who also drives a school bus.

Four other drivers with perfect records stretching more than 20 years and the schools they serve this year are Willie M. Godwin, 24 years, Palm Harbor University High and John Hopkins Middle; Rosa M. Smith, 24 years, Boca Cigar High, Bay Point Elementary and John Hopkins Middle; Roxanne M. Duncan, 21 years, Countryside High and Nina Harris School; Mattie N. Paschal, 20 years, Starkey Elementary and Pinellas Marine Institute.

The remaining drivers who will be honored during National School Bus Safety Week and their years of service are Dorothy E. Sutton (17 years); Deborah A. Kerns (13 years); Gabriel Ortiz (12 years); Sharon K. Hodges and Suzanne M. Heater (11 years); Ronald Buncombe, Felix  Cartagena and Napoleon Thompson (10 years).
