Welch assigned to Fireworks Task Force
Article published on Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007
PINELLAS COUNTY - Commissioner Kenneth T. Welch was recently appointed to the Consumer Fireworks Task Force by Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio.

The task force was created under an agricultural bill SB 1372 during this past legislative session to study the sale of fireworks in the state and make recommendations for regulations.

The use of fireworks is illegal in Florida except for agricultural purposes, allowing consumers to sign a waiver stating that they are using the fireworks to scare birds and creatures away from fish farms, railroad tracks or rock quarries.

The Pinellas County Board of Commissioners passed an ordinance in 2003 closing that loophole, effectively banning fireworks that project in the air or explode. Pinellas has been joined by other counties and municipalities in the state.
