Florida Gov. Rick Scott has proclaimed that all national and state flags shall be flown at half-staff at the Pinellas County Courthouse, St. Petersburg City Hall, as well as the state Capitol in Tallahassee Oct. 27 in honor of Army Specialist Brittany B. Gordon.
Gordon, 24, of St. Petersburg died on Oct. 13, 2012, in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. She was assigned to the 572nd Military Intelligence Company, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.
According to the Military Times, Gordon died of injuries caused by an improvised explosive device. Gordon was the first female from the Tampa Bay area to die in Afghanistan. Her father is Assistant St. Petersburg Police Chief Cedric Gordon.
