Eckerd choral music director Marion Smith, Ph.D., is retiring after 27 years.
ST. PETERSBURG – The Eckerd College Concert Choir will present its annual Mother’s Day concert on Sunday, May 11, 3 p.m., at the Wireman Chapel on campus, 4200 54th Ave. S.
This will be the last concert led by Eckerd choral music director Marion Smith, Ph.D., who is retiring after 27 years.
The annual spring concert is titled “Come Let’s Be Merry” and will feature Mozart’s Coronation Mass in C, which the choir recently performed at Carnegie Hall with other groups from across the country. The Mozart piece and several other works will be accompanied by a chamber orchestra, many of whose members are in the Florida Orchestra. Spirituals, secular songs and a medley from “Ragtime” will round out the program.
The concert will celebrate not only mothers and families but also Smith, who has contributed significantly to the cultural life of the community for nearly three decades. Choral alumni and other long-time supporters of the Eckerd music program will be on hand to express their appreciation to Marion.
