Title I Family Resource Center opens ST. PETERSBURG – The Pinellas County Schools’ Title I Family Resources opened Aug. 18. The center will offer a variety of educational programs for families of children in pre-kindergarten through grade 5 throughout the year, including a dad’s book club, parent workshops, “make-and-take” activities, storytellers and other activities. There will be educational resources such as books, videos, and games that will be available to check out. Children must be accompanied by an adult when visiting the center. Call 893-2988.
Students get up-close with the Rays Several students from Pinellas County high schools participate in Sportz Ventures’ High School Media Internship Program, participating as active members of the media at the Tampa Bay Rays versus Baltimore Orioles baseball game Aug. 19 at Tropicana Field. These students are interested in post high school careers in the sports industry and were given media credentials as well as access to batting practice, players and the press box.
Kier becomes one of first SCOR Scholars CLEARWATER – Kacee Kier of Clearwater has recently become one of the first SCOR Scholars. Kier is a management major at Clemson University. The 22 Supply Chain Operations Reference Scholars studied under Clemson management assistant professor Scott Ellis, and during the class, students learned a supply-chain framework that facilitates analysis and improvement of complex supply-chain processes. Students earned SCOR Scholar certification after successfully completing a two-hour certification exam.
Zirbel graduates from Union College CLEARWATER – Alexandria Zirbel of Clearwater recently graduated from Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., with a bachelor of arts in political science. About 500 students received undergraduate degrees at Union College June 14. Paul A. Volcker, former chairman of the Federal Reserve and head of President Barack Obama’s economic recovery advisory panel, was the featured speaker.
Middle school math education pilot project launched A math education pilot project, SunBay Digital Mathematics, was recently launched in Pinellas County. The Helios Education Foundation and the Pinellas County School District are partnering with SRI International and the College of Education at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg to set the direction of the future of middle school math education for the county.
This one year pilot will focus on refining and evaluating the use of proven effective math resources in select middle school classrooms. The Pinellas Education Foundation will fund the project. If funding is secured in future years, the project would expand to include more teachers and students.
