LARGO – Largo Fire Rescue evacuated about 50 children and six staff members from several classrooms at Anona Christian Preschool as part of Fire Prevention Week Oct. 10.
The drill involved using windows as a means of evacuating the building at 12301 Indian Rocks Road.
“These required windows are a secondary means of egress when the main door or hallway is compromised during a fire,” explained Largo Fire Marshal Timothy Wedin.
The goal of the drill was to better equip school staff and students to handle a real evacuation as well as demonstrate Largo Fire Rescue’s response to an evacuation incident.
Fire Inspector Ronald Kinsey, who runs egress drills at private schools on a regular basis, organized and ran the drill. Bringing firefighters to perform the drill was designed to be a promotional event for Fire Prevention Week.
