PALM HARBOR - At Spring Valley School, where learning is "organic" and the garden is, too, students and staff are being honored for their environmental conservation efforts.
The democratic free school located in Palm Harbor was selected as a Florida Green School Award finalist by the state Department of Environmental Protection and the Florida Department of Education, in conjunction with other state agencies and community organizations. It was the only finalist from Pinellas County in a field of 78 nominees statewide, earning its honor in the "school" category.
Spring Valley diverted 60 percent of waste from the landfill through recycling, saved 19,680 gallons of water this year, and saved more than $4,000 in expenses through its green measures.
