ST. PETE BEACH – A St. Petersburg Police office and a passenger on a Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority bus suffered minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital early Saturday morning.
Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash that occurred about 7:06 a.m. in the area of 59th Avenue and Gulf Boulevard in St. Pete Beach.
According to deputies, St. Petersburg Police Officer Michael Weiskopf was assisting with traffic in the area of 59th Avenue and Gulf Boulevard in St. Pete Beach. Weiskopf was directing traffic to assist with eastbound lane closures for the St. Pete Beach Classic.
Weiskopf was on his agency issued motorcycle and attempting to assist another motorist when he was struck by a PSTA bus driven by Gene G. Ziccardy, 56, of St. Petersburg. The bus was traveling at a low rate of speed at the time of the incident. A passenger on the bus who was standing during the crash was also injured.
The bus driver and the second passenger on the bus were not injured during the crash.
