Pedestrian killed on Gulf Boulevard
Article published on Wednesday, March 15, 2006
MADEIRA BEACH – The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a pedestrian who was struck the afternoon of March 9 by a vehicle in the 14900 block of Gulf Boulevard.

The crash occurred when the pedestrian, Ronald Crane, 52, of Clearwater, unexpectedly stepped into the path of a white Buick that was southbound on Gulf Boulevard, according to a report from the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.

According to the report, the driver of the Buick, Romeo Bernard, 78, of Madeira Beach, had just accelerated away from a traffic light at the intersection of 150th Avenue.

Deputies said as the vehicle approached him, Crane bent over and unexpectedly stepped into the roadway. The driver of the car was unable to avoid a collision and struck the pedestrian with the right front bumper of the car, knocking him to the pavement.

The impact and subsequent fall caused serious injury to Crane, who was transported by ambulance to St. Petersburg General Hospital in St. Petersburg, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival, reports said.

Deputies said the driver of the Buick was not injured and neither speed nor alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact Sgt. Kenneth Page of the sheriff’s office at 582-6200.
