Article published on Tuesday, March 18, 2008
INDIAN SHORES – Incumbent Steve Sutch and Carole Irelan were elected to the Indian Shores Town Council March 11. In recent interviews, they provided information about their backgrounds and platforms.

Steve Sutch

Councilor Steve Sutch, completing his first term as a member of the town council, said, “I remain committed to working in tandem with other elected officials, town staff and the police department and will make every effort to be worthy of your support.”

Sutch said he has a number of goals he wants to pursue – continue working to improve Gulf Boulevard, help to retain federal, state and county funding for beach nourishment, develop effective and enforceable improvements to the building code, assist in developing the town’s beautification plan, improve town sign ordinances and prevent increased residential density.

Sutch has a long record of public service, including chairperson of the ad hoc committee on building and zoning codes; vice chairman, public services committee; board member, town recreation committee; organizer of the 2007 fall coastal cleanup; logistics coordinator for the hurricane season’s Indian Shores Emergency Operations Plan and town representative for oversight of Regional Metropolitan Planning Organization.

Sutch worked hard with the Barrier Islands Governmental Council to successfully prevent the state from moving the Pinellas County coastal construction line.

He is past president of Indian Shores Property Owners Association, where he also served as vice president, secretary-treasurer. He is also vice president of the Beach Club Condominium Association.

Sutch, a 14-year resident of Indian Shores, retired from a 35 year career in distribution for the H.J. Heinz Company. He has been married to wife Mary for 50 plus years.

Carole Irelan

Carole Irelan, originally from Pittsburgh, has been a resident of Indian Shores for 10 years.

Irelan has served on the town’s public service committee; board of adjustment and appeals; recreation ad hoc committee; library board; property owners association and Golden Shores Condominium Association, where she served as a board member and treasurer.

Irelan said there are a number of important issues facing the town, such as the completion of Gulf Boulevard, including the beautification of the roadway. She said that preserving the town’s most important asset – its beaches – is most important.

She said she is running because the issue of hotels and increased density needs to be dealt with.

“I chose Indian Shores because it is more residential than commercial,” she said. “That’s the way I want it to remain. I want to ensure it remains a great place to spend the rest of my life.”

Irelan has business and financial skills to contribute to the town. ”For the town to continue to thrive it must be run like a good business,” she said.

Irelan is widowed with two sons: Jim, a senior partner for Price Waterhouse Cooper in Sydney Australia; and Jeff, owner of Sunset Pools in Jacksonville.

Irelan was owner-operator of a small business in Pennsylvania. She also worked as an office and financial manager for construction companies in Florida.

“I promise to work with and for the people toward the betterment of our town,” Irelan said.
