Woman’s club donates items for troops

INDIAN SHORES – At a recent meeting of the Indian Shores Woman’s Club, the ladies used the foyer of Town Hall to pile and stack an array of packaged snacks, toiletries and other goods – all collected to send to military personnel in Iraq.

“We are collecting items for our troops in Iraq,” said club president Marlene Clausen. “These are items that they cannot get there since there are no post exchanges or Wal-Marts over there. We are going to continue sending toiletries, snack items, small hand-held fans for the summer and a big variety of items so they will not be forgotten. We want them to know that we are behind them and we appreciate what they are doing for us in the United States. We will continue to collect these items until they all come home.”

Clausen said they are always seeking donated items and she is hoping the effort will expand to other municipalities.

The list of items sought is extensive. Examples include: peanuts, powdered lemonade or Gatorade, cheese and crackers, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, shaving lotion, razor blades, feminine hygiene items, socks, pens, disposable cameras, books, magazines, and a large number of other items. The woman’s club maintains a list of 65 suggested items. Things that cannot be sent include aerosol cans, alcohol products, glass containers, pork products or anti-Muslim literature.

Those interested in making donations can drop them off at Town Hall, 19305 Gulf Blvd.

The Indian Shores Woman’s Club also honored retiring Mayor Don Taber and long-time volunteer Bob Frey. The event included refreshments of cake, wine and other goodies. Afterward, the group enjoyed spirited line dancing.
