MADEIRA BEACH – American Legion Post 273 sustained heavy damage April 5 from a storm that is being called a small tornado.
About 100 patrons were inside. No injuries were reported.
The storm, which hit just before 9 p.m., caused extensive damage to the main lounge at the post, located at 600 American Legion Drive off Duhme Road.
“The roof caved in and flooded the bar,” said Senior Vice Commander Dan Koker. “We had heavy damage to the back of the patio. It tossed furniture around like toothpicks.”
Koker said part of the patio roof was torn off and a 5-ton air conditioning unit tipped over.
“There also was a telephone pole in the front that snapped and the transformer exploded in the parking lot,” said Koker. “We also had some damage to vehicles in the parking lot.”
Koker said most functions of the post were expected to be up and running Tuesday, April 8, “but it’s anybody’s guess on the main lounge.”
