Article published on Tuesday, May 20, 2008
MADEIRA BEACH – Flatiron Constructors, The Florida Department of Transportation contractor for the John’s Pass Bridge Replacement Project, plans intermittent channel closures Sunday to Thursday through July 2008 for construction of the bridge deck.

The closures will be as follows:

• 1 to 1:30 a.m. Full closure. No boats will be permitted to travel under the bridge.

• 1:30 to 10:30 a.m. Restricted height closure. Boats that do not require a bridge opening are permitted to travel under the bridge.

• 10:30 to 11 a.m. Full closure. No boats will be permitted to travel under the bridge.

The John’s Pass Bridge Replacement Project entails replacing two draw bridges over John’s Pass with new bridges. The new bridges will provide, two 12-foot travel lanes in each direction, 8-foot sidewalks on each bridge, 4-foot inside and 10-foot outside shoulders for each bridge, a new bridge tender house, and four observation decks.

The new bridges will widen the navigational channel from 60 feet to 100 feet and increase the vertical clearance by 8 feet. Additional work will include improvements to lighting, signing, and pavement markings.

Work is expected to be complete early 2011.
